Dole Dispenser System

A dry food and liquid dispenser to aid the visually impaired.

During my studies in Berlin, Germany, I enrolled in a summer long user-centered Open Kitchen studio.

In this studio, we explored how those with physical handicaps could be equipped with the necessary tools to feel independent and empowered in the kitchen.

I was then introduced to Silja Korn, a blind artist and photographer who lost her vision at the age of 11 due to a car accident.

After conducting an interview with Silja, I learned that while still independent in the kitchen, accurately measuring her foods and drink in an easy manner was an issue that she expressed.

Proposal

A two-part product that aims to provide a solution for people who are visually impaired to easily pour and store their food and drink.

  • A countertop appliance that measures and dispenses its contents into the user’s vessel of choice.

  • A modular storage system of containers that are provided and used with the dispenser.

Research

Blind users must use devices like liquid level indicators and specialized measuring cups.  Both of which require battery replacement and are not always accurate.

I proceeded to interview Silja about the dispensing system and came away with a few important features to implement. The dispenser should be compact, easy to use, and voice activated.

Appliances that dispense liquids use devices called flowmeters to measure out the amount poured. Dry food dispensers are primarily mechanically driven which open valves that allow for dry food to flow through.

Bowls used in the household come in varying widths and heights depending on their function. The largest bowls can exceed 12” in diameter for mixing large amounts of ingredients. Most bowls do not exceed over 6” in height.

Average storage containers come in packs with sizes related to their function. Smaller container packs range from 500mL to 1.5L. Others can range from 2L to over 6L. These are primarily for a large amount of baking ingredients such as sugar and flour.

Materials

The Dole Dispenser System is constructed with materials that are easy to keep clean. This product aims to serve as a companion for its visually impaired user, with lasting quality and longevity.

  1. Solid glass container

  2. Molded silicone lid

  3. RFID chip

  4. ABS iris connection port

  5. Aluminum scale

  6. ABS housing

  7. Aluminum speaker array

  8. Smart home button

  9. Indicator LED

  10. ABS dispensing nozzle

  11. Stainless steel inner plating

Functionality

  • RFID Identification

User picks up container to place on dispenser. Dispenser reads RFID chip on lid and gives audio feedback of its contents.

Indicator LED flashes with each interaction to further assist partially blind users.

To “label” a container, user presses the smart home button and says what the contents of the container is.

  • Activation

User is able to tell where to place vessel due to rubber concentric indexing rings. User activates dispenser by pressing the smart home button.

  • Voice Activation

User says the desired amount to dispense Dual headed nozzle toggles based on type of contents being dispensed

  • Dispenser Smart Response

Dispenser proceeds to dispense contents of the container into the placed vessel below. Auditory feedback once dispensing is complete.
